A 52-year-old clergyman in Embu who sat the 2017 KCPE exam and scored 218 marks has vowed to proceed with secondary school education.

Rev John Rutere Mugo, the head of Yahweh Restoration Assembly Church, said he was overjoyed after making a major step towards realising his dream of attaining a secondary school certificate.

The father of two, who dropped out of school 32 years ago, got 43 percent in English, Kiswahili (40), Math (41), Science (38) and Social Studies (56).

He emerged second among the 67 private candidates who sat the KCPE exam at Urban Primary School in Embu County, with the best candidate getting 238 marks while the third had 212.

A sitting Embu MCA is reported to have skipped the exams.

Rev Rutere said he had sent a text message seeking to know his results on Tuesday but only received a confirmation Wednesday afternoon.

“I was busy with members of my congregation building the pastor’s (his) house.

“I plan to further my studies and after getting the KCSE certificate, I will then decide which course to undertake,” he said by phone.

Rev Rutere had earlier told Nation that he used to read his children’s books.

One of them is a student at Meru School, a national school in Meru County, and the other one is a Class Five pupil at Lions Primary School in Embu.

It is after realising that he was grasping most of the subjects, and after motivation from his wife, Ms Lucy Rwamba, that he got the courage to join the adult education class.

He says his wife taught him how to use a computer and how to write emails, thus enabling him to communicate, though with her guidance.

“I had great thirst for education and always read books belonging to my children. My wife who has a diploma in transport management has always been motivating me.

“I want to complete high school not to get any employment but to improve myself. I get challenges when responding to letters on my own. I realised that God was pushing me to acquire education,” said Rev Rutere.
